The ongoing pandemic is continuing to challenge most of us, and now more than ever it becomes apparent that our health is our greatest wealth. Recent changes in lifestyle brought on by weeks of lock-down, working from home, more hours spent hunched over a computer or on the sofa, and simply moving less can easily contribute to our bodies starting to feel achy and stiff.
Here are a few simple actions we can take every day to create and build healthy habits to take care of body and mind:
Stretch your body
As soon as you wake up take a full body stretch reaching your arms and legs away from each other, add a side bent, twist, spinal flexion and extension and repeat as desired throughout the day to help keep your body supple.
Sitting upright, set a timer for your desired time (as little as 3 minutes have shown to be beneficial), close your eyes and simply follow your breath breathing deeply in and out through your nose. The aim is to keep your mind from wandering. To help you do that try saying to yourself silently as you breath in “inhale” and as you breathe out “exhale”. When the time is up get on with your day, and you will most likely feel the benefits for hours to come.
Go for a walk
If you are working from home, get out of the house and take a walk around the block. If you are working at the office park your car a little further away and walk the last bit to work. However long or short your walk it will shift your mood and most likely brighten your day in the process. You might even have a great idea or two as you stroll. I know it happens to me.
Take regular screen breaks
Whether at home or at the office, make sure to take regular screen breaks at least every two hours and use the opportunity to get out of your seat, stretch your body, meditate, or simply rest your eyes.
